One mans vision
Booker T. Washington, a former slave turned Educator, saw the need of rural Black Children in the U.S. southern states, not being educated by the dominant White school districts in the years of segregation and “Separate but equal”.
Impressed into action
The Julius Rosenwald School building program resulted in over 5,000 schools being built in rural America, for the sole purpose of teaching those children who would have otherwise not had the opportunity. At one point, a third of all Black Children in America were being taught in a Rosenwald School.
Together, their plan changed history, and no one was ever told.
Julius Rosenwald, a Jewish immigrant who started out sewing men’s suit’s, and worked his way to sole owner of the global Sears & Roebuck Department stores. Julius would live by the Jewish Doctrine of “Tikkun Olam”, translates to “repair the world" through social action and ethical behavior. Julius Rosenwald would put 90% of his wealth into programs to help others.
